8 Theological Assumptions About Youth Ministries

#1) Youth Ministry Is Not A Youth Group

Youth ministry is how a young person feels when he or she enters your church on Sunday morning and how young people experience Christ when they encounter you in the world.

#2) People Are More Important Than Things

Yet we act like programs (things) are more important than kids (people).

#3) Youth Ministry Is About Evangelism And Church Growth

Every church that is growing, thriving and proclaiming the Good News has a strong Youth Ministry and Christian Education program.

#4) Youth Ministry Is Not About Providing Activities For The Youth Who Come To Church

Youth Ministry is about how we find ways to reach young people throughout the community rather than “servicing” our (and only our) kids. It is more than ministry to those who look, act, and are like us.

#5) Youth Ministry Is Different In Every Place

There is no magic formula, perfect resource or ideal program. The ministry must emerge from the life of your community (vision).

#6) Youth Ministry Is Possible In Every Place

Every church can develop a ministry with young people if they think beyond their walls and boundaries. You are limited only by your imagination, your willingness to dream (vision) and the effort that follows.

#7) Our Goal (but not the starting point) Must Be Youth-led Youth Ministry

Never underestimate the ability of young people or their need for support.

#8) All Things Are Possible

All things are possible through the power of Christ working in us (even youth ministry). See Ephesians 3:20-21 and Philippians 4:13; I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
